Sacred Heart was founded on Eliot in Detroit, Michigan. Father Quinn named Executive Director (1967-1987).
1972
In 1972 Sacred Heart purchased a building on E. Elizabeth in Detroit and added medical withdrawal management.
1976
In 1976 Sacred Heart acquired a facility in Richmond and began serving women, as well as men. By the end of the decade Sacred Heart had begun to treat not only alcoholism but drug addictions, as well.
1981
In 1981 Sacred Heart became nationally accredited, making its services eligible for purchase by third-party payers.
1986
In 1986 Sacred Heart began providing outpatient services in Detroit, and eventually adding outpatient sites in Warren and Southgate.
1987-2001
The decade of the nineties saw dramatic changes in the way the State purchased substance abuse services, changes that forced Sacred Heart into a difficult period of retrenchment. By the end of the decade, Sacred Heart had sold its Detroit properties and moved all residential and its administrative headquarters to the Richmond site. Robert Koval was appointed Executive Director (1987-1993). John Sass became Executive Director (1993-2002).
2002-2005
Grady Wilkinson became President and CEO (2002-2015). From 2002 to 2005 Sacred Heart closed its Southgate office and opened a new office in Westland. Later, Sacred Heart acquired Clearview, a specialty women and children’s residential service in Port Huron and it expanded that program to include outpatient and intensive outpatient services for women. Sacred Heart opened, an outpatient office in Flint. Later, Sacred Heart closed its Westland outpatient office and relocated the Detroit outpatient site. During this time, Sacred Heart expanded the opiate addiction treatment program to offer residential treatment for individuals on medication-assisted recovery programs, methadone therapy for pregnant persons addicted to opiates and outpatient methadone therapy services.
2006-2007
From 2006 to 2007 Sacred Heart acquired the programs of Bay Area Social intervention Services, Inc. This acquisition gave Sacred Heart an outpatient location in Bay City, serving adults and adolescents. It also brought substance abuse prevention services and HIV/AIDS care management and education services. Sacred Heart also expanded by opening an outpatient office in Algonac and New Haven. Major renovation project at the Richmond campus 2007-2008.
2008-2010
From 2008 to 2010 Sacred Heart acquired the New Life Home for Recovering Women and opened an office in Saginaw to serve as its headquarters for their AIDS Care Program and a location for outpatient services.
2011
In 2011 Sacred Heart opened two new Recovery and Wellness centers in Flint and Madison Heights, incorporating drug-free and medication-assisted outpatient treatment, alternative and complementary medicine practices, primary care and peer support. Sacred Heart also expanded services of the AIDS Care Program in Flint and Saginaw.
2012
In 2012 Clearview Home for Women and Children, moved to the Richmond campus and integrated primary care services at its Madison Heights location. Sacred Heart also initiated, Hopeful Hearts— a specialized educational program for pregnant persons.
2013-2014
From 2013-2014 Sacred Heart opened the Port Huron Recovery Center in the former Clearview building. It consolidated the Warren office services into Madison Heights and closed New Life Home for Recovery Women. The AIDS Care Program housing assistance was expanded and it opened Serenity Hills Recovery and Wellness Center, in Berrien Center.
2015
Paula Nelson named President and CEO (2015-Current). We expanded services offered at our Clearview Home for Women and Children by adding withdrawal management services, allowing women to bring their children with them while receiving withdrawal management and residential services. We developed formal recovery support services in 2015 at our general adult detoxification and residential program in Richmond and the Madison Heights office.
2016
We developed recovery support services at our Flint Recovery and Wellness Center, at our Clearview location, and at a Benton Harbor Housing complex. Weekly trauma services were initiated at the St. Clair County Intervention Center. Sacred Heart implemented the use of all three FDA-approved medications (Buprenorphine, Methadone, and Naltrexone) to our outpatient medication-assisted treatment programs in Flint and Madison Heights. The use of Naltrexone at all three residential programs was initiated for clients transitioning to an outpatient medication-assisted recovery program. Sacred Heart partnered with a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), to develop a medication-assisted program inside a clinic in Macomb County. The FQHC also provides physical health primary care services at Sacred Heart’s Madison Heights Recovery and Wellness Center. Sacred Heart trained individuals on the use of the life-saving overdose drug - Naloxone (Narcan) - and distributes Narcan kits to clients and family members of clients.
2017
We expanded our use of medications and implemented recovery support services at our Richmond medication-assisted outpatient program. Medication-assisted medical services utilizing Naltrexone were initiated for inmates at the St. Clair County Intervention Center with services being provided at our Richmond Campus. We implemented recovery support services inside a health system’s emergency department and a shelter in Berrien County. Sacred Heart worked with a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to develop a medication-assisted treatment program utilizing Naltrexone (Vivitrol) at a location in northern Macomb County. We expanded services at Clearview to include offering withdrawal management and short-term residential services to fathers that need to bring their children into treatment with them. Sacred Heart collaborated with a health system in Macomb County and the Macomb County Office of Substance Abuse to replicate the Hopeful Hearts program at a hospital in Macomb County. We opened a recovery home in Benton Harbor to provide recovery housing services to individuals in Southwest Michigan. Sacred Heart celebrated its 50th anniversary.
2018
Sacred Heart collaborated with a health system in Southwest Michigan to develop a medication-assisted treatment program in the health system’s walk-in clinic. The Macomb County Health Department started providing HIV testing at the Richmond Township Residential program. Sacred Heart partnered with Oakland Community Health Network and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office to develop a medication-assisted treatment program inside of the jail in Pontiac. Sacred Heart enhanced its annual Great Lakes Bay Region AIDS Run & Walk to now be a 5K Run & Walk for Wellness and Recovery for all Sacred Heart programs.
2019
Sacred Heart opened St. Clair Shores Outpatient Recovery and Wellness Center, a comprehensive health and wellness center in Southern Macomb County, offering drug-free and medication-assisted outpatient services, along with a variety of wellness services. Opened a new recovery home in Madison Heights with an emphasis on individuals engaged in medication-assisted treatment services. Sacred Heart partnered with Region 10 Prepaid Inpatient Health Plan and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office to develop a medication-assisted treatment program utilizing all three FDA-approved medications with all services provided at the jail. We started providing medication-assisted treatment services at the jail in Macomb County. Opened two recovery homes in Eastpointe for individuals engaged in medication-assisted treatment services.
2020
Sacred Heart received certification at our recovery homes from the Michigan Association of Recovery Residences. Implemented an Opioid Health Home at our St. Clair Shores location. Our physical outpatient location in Watervliet was closed due to space issues. Outpatient services for consumers in Southwest Michigan were then offered at our Serenity Hills Residential location. Sacred Heart purchased a building in St. Ignace to begin renovations for a medication-assisted outpatient location. The remainder of the year was spent trying to safely manage the Coronavirus Global Pandemic, which included an overhaul of our programs to comply with the federal and state guidance. Much focus was spent on shifting in-person services to teletherapy.
2021
Additional technology was implemented to enhance virtual services provided at all locations. Sacred Heart's St. Ignace location received extensive renovations. This location also went through the required federal and state regulatory inspections for certification as an Opioid Treatment Program. Sacred Heart implemented a new electronic health record (EHR). One of our goals was to have an efficient comprehensive record with a user-friendly patient portal. The need for consumers to access information is even more critical with a large number of services provided virtually. We closed one recovery home in Macomb County, relocated our Oakland County recovery home, and converted our recovery home in Berrien County to a home for women. Sacred Heart started Opioid Health Home (OHH) services at our Flint and Richmond locations.
2022
Early in 2022, Sacred Heart received approval from the Centers for Substance Abuse Treatment certifying the St. Ignace location as an Opioid Treatment Program. In February 2022, the Saint Ignace office began providing comprehensive outpatient services, focusing on opioid treatment, utilizing all three FDA-approved medications – Buprenorphine, Methadone, and Naltrexone. Our St. Ignace location is the only certified opioid treatment program to ever exist in the Upper Peninsula. Opioid Health Home services were implemented at our Madison Heights Recovery and Wellness Center. Sacred Heart celebrated its 55th anniversary.

Sacred Heart closed the Algonac and New Haven offices, and current clients began services at the Port Huron and Richmond Outpatient location. We expanded our residency program to another major health system, allowing medical residents a better understanding of Sacred Heart’s services and more exposure to the use of Methadone, Buprenorphine and Naltrexone. We implemented OHH services at our Port Huron location.
